  • How much does a good veterinarian make per year?

It’s been my dream to be a vet since I was three, and now that it’s time to choose my major, I’m still leaning towards biology (which would help get into vet school). How much would I make if I had a good, steady practice, and if I intended to eventually open my own private separate practice? Thanks!

A lot depends on where you intend to set up practice and what type of practice you want (large animals, small animals, exotics, etc.) Also, the compensation depends on whether you specialize. Just like in people medicine specialists get greater compensation than generalists but there are fewer openings.

A new veterinarian just out of school can expect to be hired into an existing practice starting around $60 – $75 thousand. A specialist, after becoming board certified, can expect to start around $100 – $110 thousand.
